The hunt
The king's forests are full of game: roe and red deer, hares, boar - and wolves after dark. Hunt them with a licence, butcher what you bring down, and sell the meat, hides and trophies.
- The licence
Every hunting ground is a royal forest with a huntsman at its lodge (his sign shows the way;
/gamemarks the nearest). He sells a week's licence: 60 groschen, half for a hunter of the trade, free for the king's huntsman (level 10)./licenceat the lodge, or talk to him. - The game
A forest wakes when someone rides near: deer graze and bolt when you come close - approach slowly, and from far with a bow. Hares are quicker still. A boar charges whoever presses it or strikes it, and gores hard. After dark a pack of wolves may come out and stalk whoever walks the woods. The huntsman points out fresh tracks (talk to him > Where is the game?).
- The kill
Bring the beast down with a bow, a crossbow or a blade. A forest hunted hard grows quiet: every beast taken leaves one fewer for the next half hour.
- Butchering
Kneel by the carcass and
/butcher(or the huntsman's menu): a few seconds still, and the meat, the hide and the trophies go into your sack. A hunter of the trade gets twice what an amateur gets, and is paid for it. Your kill is yours for a minute and a half - unless your party is with you. - Selling and cooking
Venison, boar meat, hare, hides, wolf pelts, antlers and boar tusks sell at any market (
/marketshows the prices). At a kitchen the meat becomes roast hare, roast venison, smoked venison, boar and smoked boar rump.
What a beast gives
| Beast | What it gives (a hunter of the trade) |
|---|---|
| Hare | 1 hare |
| Roe deer, doe | 2 venison, 1 hide |
| Stag | 3 venison, 1 hide, antlers (3 in 5) |
| Boar | 3 boar meat, 1 hide, a tusk (1 in 2) |
| Wolf | 1 wolf pelt, and a 15-groschen bounty from the farmers |
Poaching
A kill without a licence is poaching. The huntsman sees everything near his lodge; deeper in the woods a gamekeeper may see you (about one time in three). Seen, your name goes to the Watch as a poacher, on the wanted board. Wolves are vermin: they need no licence.
Pastures and wolves
Outside the villages, the herdsmen keep the flocks: sheep, cattle and pigs grazing, which nobody may harm. On some nights wolves come for them - drive them off before they take a sheep. Each wolf pays its bounty.
