Life in the realm
The life of the streets
The realm is never empty. Its people work at their trades, keep to their corners of the town, and the watch stands at every market.
At their work
Smiths at the forge, farmhands in the fields, tapsters at the barrels, the mint's men at the dies: the townsfolk of every town stand at the work of their place.
In the streets
Burghers, labourers, servants, beggars and drovers stand about the markets, the halls and the taverns; pedlars, pilgrims and carters rest there on their way.
Dressed for it
Each wears the clothes of their station - a burgher's coat, a labourer's rags, a monk's habit, a guard's mail - and the face of their own town's people.
Mortal
The townsfolk and the guards can be struck down - but the town cries murder, the guards come, and the Watch posts the killer's name. The dead are replaced after ten minutes. The keepers of the realm's services (the moneylenders, clerks, merchants, innkeepers) cannot be hurt.
Talk to any of them with the use key: they turn to you and have a word to say - a traveller tells you where they are bound. See Crime and the guards for what happens when you rob or strike one.
